Hon. Leo Valentine, Jr.

1953-2019

Leo Valentine Jr., as a jurist was described as a calm, commanding presence who treated all who appeared before him with dignity, and respect. He began his professional career in 1984 working for the San Diego Transit, first as bus driver, dispatcher, supervisor and finally assistant director of operations. In 1985, he was offered a supervisor position at the Orange County Transit Department and then on to the Long Beach Transit before beginning Law School. His work there was highlighted when that company received the best-run transit division property award by the American Public Transit Association.

After graduating from Western State School of Law in Fullerton, he joined the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office in 1990. He was hired by then District Attorney Ed Miller. He worked in various assignments including the Gang unit and Superior Court. His courtly manner and affable personality made him a friend to his colleagues within the District Attorney’s office. He eventually was named as the Assistant Chief of the Juvenile Division.

He was appointed to the Municipal Court in 1995 by Governor Pete Wilson. In 1998, he was elevated to the San Diego Superior Court, where he continued to serve with distinction including service in the Juvenile Court Division. He characterized juvenile court work as the most important assignment on the bench.

Judge Valentine retired from the bench on February 18, 2019 and passed way a few weeks later March 23, 2019. Hon. Roderick Shelton, Assistant Presiding Judge in El Cajon stated, “Our Court was truly blessed to have him as a colleague” “Leo was the epitome of grace under pressure.”” He represented humility with dignity and humbleness with pride.” “I strive to follow his example as a jurist and a friend.” “Simply put, he was my mentor.”
